At this week’s meeting, the Perrysburg Board of Education recognized the Citizens for Perrysburg Schools 2014 Bond Issue Campaign Committee:
It has been 13 years since the district has constructed or expanded a building. Since that time, the district has added 600 students. To put this in perspective, we have added enough students to fill Ft. Meigs Elementary School, which finished the school year with 608 students. The district is currently utilizing 20 portable classrooms across the district to educate students.
Since the 1930s, the district has constructed a school or major addition each decade, except during the 1940s. It is no coincidence that the 1950s was the only decade that the district built two schools and added onto another.
As a result of the community’s continued support over the generations, Perrysburg has remained a destination district. This has contributed to keeping property values high and homes in the district very desirable.
The Board is unified in wanting to reduce the impact of a bond issue on taxpayers. This bond issue will not be collected until after January 1, 2016. On December 31, 2015, 1.85 mills that are currently being levied from the construction of Ft. Meigs Elementary School, and other district improvements, will expire. The bond issue for project will be for $38.9 million, or 2.94 mills. With the 1.85 mills that are retiring, it will be a net increase to taxpayers of 1.09 mills. For a home valued at $200,000, it will mean an increase of $6.36 per month.
Currently, there are almost 1,000 potential new single-family residences zoned in our district, almost all of which will be located south of I-475 and west of I-75. Growth over the last decade in the school district has been steady, with an average of 1.5%-2% per year. With more family-friendly developments started and planned in this area, growth will continue. The location of this school will be determined following the passage of the bond issue. There are numerous parcels of property available in the southwest central corridor of the district that have the attributes desired by the district.
Campaign Committee Co-Chair Kerry Corrigan Wellstein grew up in Perrysburg, attended Woodland Elementary and graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1995. She went on to graduate from BGSU with a bachelors in Art Education. She moved back to Perrysburg in 2009 with her husband John Wellstein, who also grew up in Perrysburg and attended all Perrysburg schools, after they lived in Chicago for 10 years.
Kerry is currently on the Board of the Perrysburg Schools Foundation and Grace Preschool. She is Co-Owner of CREATE: Art Studio + Workshop in Downtown Perrysburg and is an investor of real estate in Downtown Perrysburg. She has two children, ages 6 and 9, who attend Toth Elementary School.
Campaign Committee Co-Chair David Matolyak moved to Perrysburg from the Cleveland area in 1993 with his wife, Anne, who is an Intervention Specialist for Perrysburg Schools. Their two daughters, Courtney and Lindsay, both attended Perrysburg Schools K-12 with Courtney graduating in 2009 and Lindsay in 2011.
While his daughters attended Frank Elementary, Dave was an active member of their Parents Club and ultimately became President of that organization for three years. During that time they built the playground outside of the Kindergarten wing and air-conditioned the Art Room and Cafeteria. They also developed McDonald’s Night, Movie Night and Pool Nights at that time.
He also: coached Junior Jackets girl’s basketball for 5 years, co-managed the Titans Girls Basketball GBA travel team for 4 years, worked on numerous Levy Campaigns and Bond Issues for the Schools, is a current member of the Steering Committee for the Locker Room Athletic Facility, was a chairperson for the 2004 Perrysburg Schools Strategic Planning Committee—Facilities Portion, served 7 years as an active PHS Athletic Booster Board Member, served 2 years as VP of PHS Athletic Boosters, served 2 years as President of the PHS Athletic Boosters, is currently President of the PHS Athletic Boosters, is a member of St. John the XXIII Catholic Community.
